Interest-Driven Learning
Youth are more engaged when learning connects to something they can see, create, and imagine themselves doing. Through natural hair care, braiding, nail design, makeup, entrepreneurship, and real-world career experiences, students practice transferable skills employers and training programs value.
The Youth Braid and Business Academy Model
Students explore careers in natural hair and braiding, cosmetology, nail technology, makeup artistry, esthetics, barbering, salon ownership, beauty education, content creation, brand development, and entrepreneurship.
Communication, customer service, professionalism, teamwork, punctuality, time management, organization, sanitation and safety, problem-solving, decision-making, responsibility, and goal setting.
These are transferable skills that serve youth across industries and future pathways.
Students practice pricing, budgeting, branding, marketing, consultations, scheduling, service menus, financial literacy, and basic business planning.
Confidence, self-awareness, accountability, perseverance, decision-making, goal setting, leadership, and self-advocacy help students grow beyond the technical skill.
Structured hands-on experiences can include simulated salon environments, mock client consultations, service workflow, team projects, community-based learning, industry exposure, career tours, and job shadowing as available.
Each experience can support career exploration, workplace expectations, postsecondary pathways, independence, collaboration, and preparation for future employment.
Work-Based Learning in Action
Youth Braid Clinics give trained youth a supervised setting to apply technical and professional skills through client consultation, sanitation, customer service, time management, teamwork, communication, and professional responsibility.

Youth Braid and Business Academy programming supports and can be crosswalked to Pre-ETS, WIOA youth workforce goals, Positive Youth Development, 21st Century learning, social-emotional learning, Virginia Workplace Readiness Skills, 21st Century Skills, Virginia SOL connections, entrepreneurship, and leadership development.
Potential measures include attendance and completion, technical skill growth, workplace readiness growth, career awareness, confidence and self-efficacy, communication, teamwork, goal setting, and work-based learning participation.
Programs can be adapted to the students, setting, timeframe, and outcomes a school, counselor, workforce partner, or youth-serving organization is working toward.
