Program Overview and Compliance
At Youth Braid and Business Academy, our mission is to empower youth aged 10-17 with essential skills in hair braiding, entrepreneurship, and various aspects of the beauty industry. Our comprehensive program covers a wide range of topics, including a variety of hair braiding techniques, natural hair styling, nail care, skin care, makeup application, and more.
We want to assure you that all our instructors are experts in their respective fields and hold the proper licenses required to teach the subjects they specialize in. Our team includes braiders, licensed cosmetologists, natural hair specialists, nail technicians, and makeup artists. Students are being taught by amazing instructors who are passionate about their craft and possess extensive knowledge and experience.
It is important to note that in Virginia, hair braiding is deregulated, meaning it does not require a license. The Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology recognizes that braiding is a cultural practice that does not involve the use of chemicals or cutting, thus exempting it from licensure requirements. We ensure that we teach our students this distinction and emphasize the importance of compliance with all relevant regulations.
Additionally, we are proactive in educating our students about the CROWN Act (Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair), a legislative movement aimed at ending hair discrimination based on race or texture. By promoting awareness of the CROWN Act, we strive to ensure that all youth feel empowered to embrace their natural hair without fear of discrimination in schools, workplaces, and other public spaces.
Our curriculum places a significant emphasis on proper hair care and maintenance. We teach students essential techniques for shampooing, detangling, conditioning, and preventing heat damage and hair loss. Furthermore, we educate students on the importance of using appropriate products and scheduling regular appointments to promote healthy hair habits.
While we cover a variety of beauty topics, it's important to note that any instruction beyond braiding is taught from the perspective of students caring for their own hair and not performing these services on others. In Virginia, performing such services on others requires a cosmetology license. We emphasize the importance of this distinction and ensure our students understand that these skills are intended for their personal use and self-care.
Beyond technical skills, our program is designed to foster confidence, self-care practices, and self-esteem among participants. We recognize the lack of knowledge that many youth have about their own hair and believe that education in this area can have a profound impact on their overall well-being.
Moreover, our focus on entrepreneurship aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to view their talents as viable career options. By teaching the business side of the hair industry, we encourage students to consider their abilities as tools for economic empowerment and future success. Our business curriculum covers topics ranging from business plans, marketing, branding, customer service, time management, pricing, consultations, to scheduling. We believe that mastering these skills is integral to workforce development and economic stability.
In closing, I want to assure you that Youth Braid and Business Academy is committed to providing a comprehensive and responsible educational experience for your students. We prioritize professionalism and adherence to industry standards while nurturing the talents and aspirations of our participants.
